EU position on WSIS/WGIG
8 June 2005 | Published in ICANN, Internet, WSIS/IGF
The European Commission has just issued a communication on WSIS/WGIG. The real substance is on page 8.
From the document: ” The EU should strongly reaffirms its commitment to the architectural principles of the Internet, including
interoperability, openness and the end-to-end principle”. It further goes on to say that governments should “exclude any involvement in the day-to-day operations”. The EU sees the role of governments as “hav[ing] a specific mission and responsibility vis-à-vis their citizens, and their role within this new cooperation model should mainly focus on principle issues of public policy”.
Let’s hope this will help counter the allegations that European governments would favour a model that allow governments to control the Internet.
